Min Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree or equivalent and three years of related experience and demonstrated success in the field. Master’s degree accepted. Requires excellent internet skills, and knowledge of Microsoft Office software and Adobe Acrobat applications. Must possess written and verbal communications expertise, demonstrated leadership, initiative and interpersonal skills.


To provide grant proposal development services to faculty members and research personnel to enable competitive individual and team extramural research funding and facilitate research excellence. Supports faculty in multiple departments and/or center(s) in all phases of the research proposal process.

Salary Range

Salary range is between $50,400 and $75,600 annually, commensurate with experience.

Depending on the experience and education, the candidate might be considered for a Sr. Research Development Specialist.

Specific Job Related Duties


  • Specifically supports all of the department’s research activities by utilizing grantsmanship skills to assist the Microbiology and Immunology faculty in obtaining research funding.

  • Providesanalytical,technicalandprofessionalsupportinwritingfundingproposals,includingdevelopmentofhypotheses,aims,andobjectives,grantsmanshipandlimitedscientificreview.Counselsandassistsjuniorfacultyandassistsseniorfacultyinthesetasks.

  • A specialty of the Research Development Specialist I is the editing of grant applications, manuscripts and other correspondence from professionals with English as a second language.

  • Develops grant budgets for proposal submission.

  • Serves as an effective liaison between investigators and the administrative entities, both nationally and at UTMB, offering such specialized services as setting up collaborative agreements and interacting with grant - making agencies.

  • Continuing education is also a function, as the Research Development Specialist I must stay abreast of changes in federal and institutional grant policy, and develop computer skills as needed to sufficiently assist researchers in the production of applications (i.e., electronic grants processing).

  • Providesstrategic,proactive,catalyticandcapacity-buildingproposalwritingexpertiseto departmentalfaculty members and researchers.

  • Initiatesandnurturescriticalpartnershipsandalliancesthroughouttheinstitution’sresearchenterprise,withinstitutionalpartnersandotherexternalstakeholderstoincrease institutional researchcompetitiveness.

  • Monitorsfundingagencychangesandprioritiesandidentifiesfundingopportunitiessuited for faculty member(s) basedupon their research expertise.

  • Worksbetweenthecenter/department,universityadministrativedepartment(s),thefaculty,andfundingagenciesforactivitiesrelatedtoproposaldevelopmentandsubmission.

  • Adheres to internal controls and reporting structure.

Preferred Work Experience

Experience with graphics software to aid faculty with figures/images for grants and other scientific documents is preferred. Experience with web design will also be preferred.
